Monday Mania

Hey ya'll,

Well here we are again..a new work week..don't everybody jump for joy at once! I hosted a homecoming party at my house this weekend. It was a lot of fun and I got to see a couple of people that I haven't seen in years. I did take a few pics but I won't upload them because I'm not sure if my friends want their pics all over the blogosphere so instead I took pics of what I wore today.

Oh yeah I also got my hair straightened so that I could get a trim. And I can tell its growing! One time I got my hair cut in layers and it has never grown back even all over. Also, the funny thing is that one side grows longer than the other and I am not sure why..maybe I sleep on the side that grows slower??

I decided to be the sunshine in the clouds. You can tell once you see my outfit...Its funny because I didn't plan it but I wore pearls today...lots of them! My last post was entitled Black Pearl so its fitting that I gave this post the title White Pearl.

You Must: Protect Your Vision

"Where there is no vision, the people perish" -Proverbs 29:18

Hey Everyone!

Last night it took me sometime to fall asleep. I began to feel overwhelmed with all the things I needed to do. Im not just talking about my daily routine "to do" list. I was thinking about all the things I needed to do to accomplish my goals. The frustration overwhelmed me and hit me with a growing wave of doubt! I started to have negative thoughts as to whether I would make my goals or should I just give up trying because it all seemed too much. And then out of no where a thought in my mind says "no, keep going, don't stop...you must protect your vision".

I began to contemplate that thought because it is so true. The things you love you must protect. Boxer, Flloyd Mayweather said it best "Protect your self at all times" after he knocked out Ortiz who tried to end his career by headbutting him in the ring.

Whether it be friend, family or foe there are going to be people in your life who will not support you. They will doubt you, not encourage you or tell you that it can't be done. And to them this is true because either they can't see themselves doing it or they haven't accomplished their own goals. People put their ability from what they have done or not done and try to put that off on you. They tell you that's not reality. The truth is reality is what you believe it to be

I live by the quote that "Being realistic is the most commonly traveled road to mediocrity". People who say stuff like "well that's reality" are limiting their lives. My thinking however is if you accept whatever it is people say you should then that is all you will ever get. Why not think that more can be done? Why not expect more out of reality? Why is reality usually so negative or limiting?

One of the best ways to protect your vision is to create a vision board. On this board you can compile images and words of what you want your life to look like. Below I have posted my vision board for my life. It serves as a visual display of inspiration and motivation for my life.

Also, practice mentally imagining yourself already in that vision. Visualization exercises will help you to believe that it can be true in your life. You will start to align your thinking and actions in accordance with your vision. One saying that I love and it totally relates to fashion is that "if you want to be in a certain position in life then you have to dress the part". You have to not only physically but mentally and emotionally put yourself into the place you want to be in life.

Other things you can do:
  • Write down all of your goals - If I don't see it in writing its less real to me and lost in my other thoughts. Writing it down makes it more concrete.
  • Write a personal mission statement- If you don't know what you are here for then whats the point!? "People who stand for nothing will fall for anything" - Malcolm X
  • Do at least one thing that you are scared to do -Become comfortable with being uncomfortable. This is when you learn how strong you are and you push yourself past your limits.
  • Do a little something each day -"Rome wasn't built in a day" and neither will your empire be. Start small and work your way up. When you start to see all that you have accomplished you will want to do more and more.
  • Read, watch and listen - Do less talking and more listening, reading and observing of positive influences.
  • Research -Know your stuff! Immerse yourself into your craft. Find a mentor who can teach you the ropes.
  • Pray, meditate, stay focused - When you live, eat, breathe and pray for your dreams they become all that counts and matters. You will be willing to do whatever it takes; and nothing anyone can say or do will stop you from attaining those dreams.

Things to remember:
  • You are your biggest enemy- protect your thoughts of self doubt and negativity.
  • Be careful who you tell your dreams -Like I said above people's visions of what you should be whether intentional or not can overcome your own thoughts of yourself. Think for yourself.
  • Keep perspective - You may become overwhelmed and depressed but remember: "There are people in life who wish they had your problems".
  • Keep God first - Most importantly, "Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart." -Proverbs 37:4

Until Next time...Stay Blessed!!

A Gray Kind of Day

Hey,

I'm a summer baby for sure. I love the heat and hate the cold...I don't know what I'm doing back in Michigan but this is home. I can't say that I don't appreciate the fall weather because I do. I love to watch the different colors of the leaves change on the trees.

Like everything in life, change is inevitable for nature too. For some reason my mood seems to be connected to nature. I think I am struggling with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) where my mood basically matches the seasons. The Fall season into winter is a progressive death. As I have learned in life you have to die in order to live...Does that make sense? You have to change and leave behind your past in order to move into your future...In thinking of the changing seasons I am reminded of the changes that are happening in me. I recall a favorite poem by Robert Frost entitled:
"Nothing Gold Can Stay"

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

This poem reminds me that everything must change but in order to survive and thrive you must embrace the changes.

Trendsetter Tuesday: A Different World

"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." - Romans 12:2

What up doe!?! (Detroit slang),

Today, I want to talk about one of my most favorite shows of all time!!! I loved this show because it showed young black people in such a positive light and was entertaining at the same time. You just can't find tv like this anymore at all!! A Different World tells a story of a group of young African Americans making their way through college.

If you check out some of the videos I posted below you can get a feel for the fashion at that time. This show aired between 1987 to 10993. The 4 characters who I can relate to in terms of their fashion sense would have to be Whitley Gilbert, Jalessa Vinson, Freddie Brooks and Denise Huxtable.

Whitley Gilbert was always one to be polished from head to toe in blazers, blouses and skirts with her button earrings and pearls. Jalessa Vinson wore her snazzy sweaters, wool coats and leather skirts with statement earrings. Now on the other side you had Denise Huxtable and Freddie Brooks who were more of the Bohemian down to earth types with their free flowing tops, vest, crochet sweaters, loafers, maxi and African print dresses in earth tones.

I think my style is a hybrid of these 4 ladies. Not to mention that these ladies all wore their natural curly hair like I do!Just the other day, I was talking to my sister about some clothing items I liked. My sister thinks my style is more "boho" or bohemian. While on some levels I can agree with my sister's assessment of my style, I added in that I think my style can also be chic (depending on the day! lol). So to classify my style I would call it "Bohochic", perhaps I am maybe more of one that the other but I think I encompass both.

My definition of chic is an appreciation of the classics. I try to keep my style sophisticated and simple. But my signature would be to add a twist or an unexpected element through statement accessories and shoes. And this leads me to my boho style which is more laid back, comfortable, earthy and a quirky vibe.

Okay, if you had to classify your style what would it be?

Breast Cancer Awareness

Hey,

I am trying to help a friend out and support the cause. There is a survey below that I would encourage you all to take. I appreciate your support!
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness, there is a special survey looking at the health needs of African-American women. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer-related death among African-American women. If you are an African-American woman over the age of 18, please feel free to fill out the survey at the link provided below:http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CLM_AfricanAmericans

Saturday Shoes

How You Doin??

US Weekly did an interview with Wendy Williams about a girl's 2nd best friend next to diamonds...SHOES!!!  I have my own mini shoe closet that I will share with you guys one day. Williams has one hundred pairs of shoes, including $3,800 crystal Christian Louboutin flats and matching heels. She wears a size 11 wide sometimes even a 12. Williams is definitely a girl after my own heart. I feel her pain in trying to find shoes that fit! Check out the video of her closet for your eye candy viewing pleasure! :-)
